Rheumatologist is a specialist physician who has expertise in diagnosing and treating diseases of the joints, muscles and bones such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. A Rheumatologist also treats autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosis, scleroderma, inflammatory muscle disease and Sjogren’s syndrome. An Australian trained rheumatologist underwent 3 years of basic physician training and then another 3 years of advanced rheumatology specialist training after completing 6 years of undergraduate medical study and 1 year of internship. It takes minimum 13 years of medical training to become a rheumatologist.
