Joint aspiration and injection

Joint aspiration is a procedure to remove fluid from a swollen joint using a needle and syringe, either to relieve swelling or to obtain fluid for analysis to diagnose a joint problem. This is normally done under local anaesthetic. Joint injection is used to put the medications into the inflamed joint, tendon sheath and bursae to provide relief for the pain and swelling. Steroids are frequently used. For osteoarthritis patients, hyaluronic acid injection into the affected joint may relieve the symptoms.

  • Takayasu’s arteritis
Medium vessel Vasculitis would include:
  • Polyarteritis nodosa

  • Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Wegener’s)
  • Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (Churg-Strauss)
Variable vessel Vasculitis would include:
  • Behcet’s disease.
Biologics Clinic

Dr. Chin Ng has extensive experience in managing patients on Biologic DMARDs (Disease Modifying Anti Rheumatic Drugs) with his 8 years of running the biologics clinic at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Biologic drugs have become an important option for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Biologic DMARDs, also known as biologic agents or biologics, are normally use to prevent or reduce the inflammation that damages joints. Biologics target molecules on cells of the immune system, joints, and the products that are secreted in the joints, all of which can cause inflammation and joint destruction. Biologics are often reserved for people who have not completely responded to conventional DMARDs and for those who cannot tolerate DMARDs in doses large enough to control inflammation.
